An Appraisal of Motivation by Salaam Rasak O.

With some people getting more passionate, there are also discerning cases of people overwhelmed by pessimism and feebleminded in the pursuit of their goals. Against this antagonistical analogy, there is a need to appraise the concept of motivation as it is the driving force of human action.

Motivation is a natural propeller which pushes an individual to strive harder for the achievement of the clearly set goals. Worthy of note, however, is that motivation could be intrinsic (internal) or extrinsic (external). Whichever one at play, it is a truism that one gets to achieve the ambition when intrinsically or extrinsically motivated. Many people have consistently failed on their paths to a course because motivation was not forthcoming.

More fundamentally, it is incontrovertible that the zeal, passion and commitment in the pursuit of a course cannot be established without a motivation. Reckoning with the values of motivation, pertinent questions then arise - what is the motivation behind your action? Why pursuing that goal? And what are the resultant effects of the goal? To answer these questions are to knowing the motivation for your action. These are onerous interrogations we must stand to answer if our goals will become dream come true.

Last week, Olubayode Treasures Olawunmi broke a Guinness book of record as the longest marathon reader aloud having read for four consecutive days. The feat was not ordinarily attained, but the motivations (sponsor, celebration and award) behind the action spurs him to victory. At the individual level, we should motivate ourselves to victory and success. Task yourself today, for instance, if I had 4.0 Grade Point, I will reward myself with a new smart phone. This is motivation at the individual level. At the external level, parents, friends and family should endeavor to motivate those within by promising them a desired material if a particular point of target is attained. These are practical ways of realizing our objectives.

With the emerging fact that goal realization may be far fetched without motivation, individual and external levels of motivation should be explored. For every given action, there is a drive. The drive then should not be undermined. Nigerians are becoming more sapping without motivation. Student-scholar no longer gets incentives and as such, are not motivated to do more. Motivation from the state level, the government, is thus quintessential. Check developed countries (Germany, USA, Holland, etc.), it is a sure means of promoting education with the avalanche of scholarships and grants. More important than ever, we must not be left out of motivation spree.
